Deviation Actions

Don't worry this isn't a deep dramatic journal about personal revelation (that comes later ;))

Thought I'd just let people know that I came across an excellent article about someone's experiences with procrastination and that it's far deeper than just being lazy. I read it a couple of days ago so details aren't perfect but either the gist or one point from it was that people that tended to succeed in childhood placed greater expectation on themselves to succeed later in life. By putting off a task they prevent themselves from being susceptible to the consequences of failing. We fear failure more than we desire success.

That's most of what I took from it and I honestly feel a lot better with myself having read it. It finally puts things in perspective and I can understand it better, which is the first step to conquering a problem.

If you follow a couple of the links in the article then you'll be on the guys blog or whatever, and I found a few more articles from his 'Experiments' tab which are very interesting. Seeing someone else attempt to tackle some problems or just try something out is quite inspiring to make some changes of my own.

So I did.

I decided to take my first baby step to stopping myself from thinking 'I'll do that later'. Clearing my dA inbox. It had gotten particularly bad as I was leaving it for days and also keeping entire comics 'for later'. I figured 1800 was enough. So I slashed that down to size, figuring if I still hadn't read/looked up something then the part of me that cared about that thing was long gone and got rid of it. Right now my deviation messages sits under 50 and that makes me very happy. An insignificant problem that was deceptively big and annoying is now out of my way, and I hope I don't stop there.

Chances are I may not make any more changes any time soon, but I like to think that this starts a chain of events. Be it tomorrow or in several years I might remember that article and take my second step away from the vicious circle of procrastination.

tldr: Read the link. Procrastination isn't always laziness, it's a deeper rooted psychological problem.

Peace out!

Indeed! I am an overachiever and after looking into psychological studies, it is very common for overachievers to be procrastinators! Here's why: An overachiever makes excuses saying they're not going to be able to give their best to do it right NOW, but maybe later. Example) There's an essay due tomorrow. Rather than do it now when I am feeling upset/mad/tired, I'll do it later when I'm feeling great so that I can achieve the HIGHEST results. Something like that! After that, I felt a lot better about my procrastinating, though I still try not to. XDD; That article is very informative, haha! c:
